IMC & The Environment

IMC is a state of the art UK manufacturer of commercial catering equipment. Over the past decade nearly £6m has been invested in facilities, plant and equipment to ensure that the factory continues to be at the forefront in both processes and efficiency.

Export is a very important part of our business with over 46% of production exported across the globe, whilst 54% is sold in the UK and at IMC we recognise that with all our success, we have a duty to reduce our impact on the environment. Over the last few years, IMC staff have worked tirelessly not only to produce award winning waste management solutions but to also ensure our factory has as smaller a carbon footprint as possible.

During our 2015 environmental review IMC concentrated on internal recycling and waste collection, the impact of our waste on the environment, the local transport requirements and further promotion of recycling products.

Initially IMC purchased 432 bags of polystyrene chips per year, primarily for packing to aid the safe transit of machines and components around the world whilst our 8 factory waste skips were emptied weekly. A waste audit revealed 75% of the waste in the skips was from cardboard packaging from incoming components.

It was this mix that led to purchase of a cardboard shredding machine. IMC now shred all inbound cardboard that arrives as packaging and re-use it as packing to send out all our spare parts orders to our customers.

In April 2016 we have reduced the number of purchased bags of polystyrene chips from 432 bags per year to just 52. With further internal source segregation of recyclable waste IMC have reduced the number of collected skips from 8 to 3. Wooden pallets that can’t be recycled or reused are sent to a company who specialises in turning pallets into horse bedding.

At IMC we will endeavour to:

  • Promote environmental awareness among our employees, train and encourage them to work in an environmentally responsible manner.
  • Reduce waste through re-use and recycling and by purchasing recycled or recyclable products and materials where these alternatives are available, economical and suitable.
  • Communicate our environmental commitment to clients, customers and the public and encourage them to support it.
  • Strive to continually improve our environmental performance and minimise the social impact and damage of activities by periodically reviewing our environmental policy in light of our current and planned future activities.
